Divan's Bungalow, Ahmedabad

Anyone who stays at the exclusive 19th century Divan's Bungalow, a new acquisition of the branded Neemrana's chain of heritage properties, can't help falling in love with its old-worldly charm.

The tranquil ambience and authentic reconstruction of a bygone era, along with a super-efficient and welcoming staff has transformed the ancestral home of renowned Mumbai architect IM Kadri into a unique and intimate heritage hotel, widely regarded as one of the best of its kind in the city.

Conveniently located, just 10 km from the airport and 2 km from the Railway Station, Divan's Bungalow is a fine blend of unique Gujarati and Islamic architecture. It boasts of a fountain fore court, a hidden garden, and eight elegantly restored exclusive rooms.

The Bungalow offers a haven in the midst of the daily hustle and bustle of the crowded old city. The moment you step out of the gates into the lanes and alleys nearby, the true India with all its chaos and vitality greets you. The friendly neighbourhood offers a brilliant insight into authentic Indian street life.

The property offers three rooms and five suites across two levels. A different colour scheme graces each exotic room, all of which have a separate entry. Authentic pieces of art and furniture in sync with local concepts of style and design lends a unique character to each of these spaces. For instance, the multi-coloured Siraj Khana suite on the first floor is done up in the traditional furshi bethak style.

The rooms and suites are named after the members of the Kadri family and the family history is on display. The two grand Gujarati style wooden jharokha-balconies which lean out on elaborate external brackets and the European-style tiled roofs add a vibrant hue to the surroundings.

The warm and discreet hospitality of the staff ensures that every need of the guest is taken care of. The regal treatment makes each guest feel special. The Bungalow has two separate kitchens serving simple, freshly-prepared local fare, sure to titillate your taste-buds. Kokila-ben presides over the lip-smacking vegetarian fare while Sohana Banu dishes out delicately prepared non-vegetarian fare.

You can see and "live" history at this 19th century heritage property even as you explore and unravel the city of Ahmedabad where Mahatma Gandhi set up his famous Sabarmati Ashram. The Calico Museum of Textiles, The NC Mehta Gallery, the Kite Museum, the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum, the City Museum, the Hatheesingh Temple, the Swaminarayan Temple, the Law Garden, the tomb of Ahmed Shah, Teen Darwaja and the Night Market figure among other places worth a visit.
