La Villa, Pondicherry

During the Anglo-French wars (1742-1763), Pondicherry exchanged hands frequently. The British captured Pondicherry from French, but the Treaty of Paris (1763) reinstated the French command once again. In the late 1850s, the French finally retained their settlements in India. Pondicherry, Mahe, Yanam, Karaikal and Chandernagar remained a part of French India until 1954. The long association with the French has left certain remnants in form of remarkable work of colonial art and architecture known across for their exquisiteness and magnificence. It was indeed a challenging task for the French architects Tina Trigala and Yves Lesprit while designing La Villa, a unique and strikingly handsome boutique hotel. This property boasts of a heritage platform with a tribute to colonial architecture and renaissance. La Villa is most centrally nestled right in the heart of the old quarter of Pondicherry called 'the white town', and is at a walking distance from all main attractions. Waking up to a new sunrise and welcoming its second innings, this place has retained ancient materials and techniques like centuries-year-old bricks, lime plaster, colored cement flooring, and handmade tiles from the villages of Tamil Nadu in addition to local granite. Antique wood from leveled houses has been recycled to create some mesmerizing and elegant furniture and local handicrafts. These objects d'art are a rare combination of the most luxurious and sophisticated western design with a touch of the vintage.
